Is a future rock star lurking somewhere among the nearly two dozen groups and solo artists set to perform at the Belly Up between tonight and Saturday?

More specifically, will the next Black Keys, Jason Mraz, Ryan Adams or Zac Brown Band take the stage at the Solana Beach nightclub sometime over the next 36 hours?

That’s certainly the hope of Michele Clark’s Sunset Sessions, the annual music industry conference that — over the past 16 years — has helped break all of the above acts, along with Jack Johnson, Five for Fighting and Fun.

The 2013 edition of Sunset Rocks, a Sunset Sessions offshoot, takes place today through Saturday at the Hilton Oceanfront Resort & Spa in Carlsbad. Among the featured guests are solo star and former Van Halen singer Sammy Hagar, Vans Warped Tour mastermind Kevin Lyman, Pennywise singer Jim Lindberg and drum star Kenny Aronoff. In addition, Friday morning’s “Moguls of the New World” panel will include Dave Kaplan, the head of Encintas-based Surf Dog Records.

“Kevin will do one of our keynote addresses, and Sammy is playing in Las Vegas, so he’s flying on his private jet to Carlsbad to do an interview and premiere some new songs for us,” Clark said. “I love having up-close and personal, one-on-one experiences with artists, especially for our music industry attendees. When Stevie Nicks was with us in La Costa two years ago for Sunset, it was like sitting with her in her living room. And when Carlos Santana joined us in Las Vegas, we had a similar experience. It’s not just about the show.”

Except, that is, when it is.

This year, for the first time in the history of Sunset Sessions and Sunset Rocks, three nights of music will be open to the public. The venue — you guessed it — is the Belly Up, where Sunset last year staged a concert by reggae legend Jimmy Cliff.

“We put our toes in the water with that show,” Clark said. “We love the Belly Up so much, and have seen so many great shows there, that we thought, ‘Let’s bring the public in.’ What’s interesting about this year’s event is that our main stage shows will be at the Belly Up. So for the first time, really, the public can have a significant influence on the artists that break (big) at Sunset.”
